This theory states that our need for secure attachment is a life-long emotional need, beginning in infancy and persisting through adulthood. This need develops into an adult need for a secure emotional bond. Being attached to another adult provides us with a strong sense of safety and security, both emotionally and physically. Attachment theory states that isolation (physical or emotional) can be traumatizing. When couples experience moments of emotional disconnection; these occur when needs aren’t clearly communicated or are misunderstood. This can lead to moments of panic about being abandoned. How we navigate these moments of disconnection determines the quality of our relationships.
